Ductile cast iron accessories for pipelines
Industrial ductile cast iron accessories are part of the networks used to transport and distribute water and other compatible fluids.
They allow pipes to be connected, the direction of a pipeline to be changed, branches to be created, diameters to be adapted and assembly or repair work to be completed.
They are used in supply networks, irrigation, sanitation, reclaimed water, urban installations, civil engineering and industry.
What is ductile cast iron?
Ductile cast iron is an alloy of iron, carbon and silicon to which magnesium is added during the manufacturing process.
The presence of magnesium encourages the graphite to adopt a spheroidal shape instead of appearing in flakes. This structure improves the mechanical behaviour of the material compared with conventional grey cast iron.
The result is a material used in components subject to pressure, mechanical loads, ground movements and the usual conditions of buried installations.
Advantages of ductile cast iron accessories
- Mechanical resistance: suitable for pipelines subject to internal and external stresses.
- Ductility: allows certain deformations to be withstood without immediate brittle failure.
- Durability: coatings help protect the accessory against corrosion and ground conditions.
- Stability: material suitable for buried networks and pipelines of different diameters.
- Variety of parts: allows joints, branches, changes of direction and transitions to be created.
- Professional application: used in urban, agricultural, industrial and civil engineering networks.
Internal and external coatings
The behaviour of the accessories does not depend only on the alloy. Internal and external coatings are also essential to protect the part and adapt it to the fluid and the installation environment.
Internal coating
Protects the surface that remains in contact with the water or transported fluid and helps preserve the hydraulic behaviour of the pipeline.
External coating
Helps protect the accessory against moisture, ground conditions, handling and the conditions typical of buried or exposed installations.
Before selecting a part, check that the coating is compatible with the fluid, the type of network and the environmental conditions of the project.
Common applications
- Potable water supply networks.
- Pipelines for agricultural irrigation.
- Sanitation installations.
- Reclaimed water networks.
- Pumping and treatment stations.
- Industrial installations.
- Urban developments and civil engineering.
- Extension and repair of existing networks.
Types of accessories for water networks
Different solutions for completing a pipeline can be found within this category.
- Elbows: allow the direction of the pipe to be changed.
- Tees: create branches towards other lines.
- Reducers: connect pipelines of different diameters.
- Flanges and adapters: create transitions between pipes, valves and equipment.
- Couplings: join or repair pipeline sections.
- Saddles: allow branches to be created on a pipe.
- Repair clamps: help solve leaks or localised damage.
- Plugs and closing pieces: finish or isolate certain sections.
How to choose a cast iron accessory
The choice must be made according to the characteristics of the pipe, the working pressure and the function the part must fulfil within the network.
- Nominal diameter: must match the pipe and the rest of the components.
- Nominal pressure: select a part suitable for the maximum pressure of the network.
- Type of joint: flange, mechanical joint, socket or other compatible system.
- Fluid: confirm suitability for potable water, irrigation, sanitation or industrial use.
- Coating: check internal and external compatibility.
- Angle and geometry: check the orientation, number of outlets and arrangement of the flanges.
- Installation conditions: consider depth, ground conditions, external loads and accessibility.
Installation in buried networks
Accessories must be installed correctly aligned and supported to avoid unnecessary stress on the joints and pipes.
At changes of direction, branches and points subject to hydraulic thrusts, it may be necessary to incorporate anchoring systems or solutions defined by the project.
Tightening torques, the screw assembly order, gasket placement and the manufacturer’s instructions must also be respected.
The admissible pressure and final behaviour depend on the complete set formed by the accessory, pipe, gaskets, bolts, supports and installation conditions.
